This week’s update is going to be extremely short due to some time commitments on a personal front. We’re reaching the height of:

  • People wanting to go do fun stuff with their families for their summer vacation
  • Projects at work that need to be done as soon as possible for a variety of reasons

In every such situation there’s always some poor schmo that get stuck holding the bag while other people have fun, and this time around that schmo is me.

In a follow-up of last week’s update (and terrible pun), this week brings the completion of the last exercise and some pondering on the next one; multiple brick types. This is one of those situations in which I have spent more time considering options and ideas than I would have spent actually just implementing something (anything) and calling it good enough. I’m still not sure if this is a sign of a little growth in the game design arena or just my regular desire for everything to be perfect to such a degree that nothing ever happens. Certainly there’s not a lot of growth in the “terrible pun” department.

Would that I could truthfully say that I spent a whole lot of time on ts-breakout this week. Alas, I was busy putting out various work related fires and in setting up a new home server to replace an old one. A fun diversion to be sure, but not very game related. As such please excuse the (extra) excruciatingly bad pun title of this week’s installment.

Somehow despite various things going fairly sideways work-wise and working on setting up a new server at home, I have managed to finish the exercise planned for this week the way I originally intended to! Let the choir of angels rejoice! Somehow I even managed to avoid getting back into engine land for this even though I was somewhat tempted.

In this week’s update, not one but two exercises have been completed! Of course, one of those is the one from last week and the other one was pretty simple, but nevertheless, progress! To be more specific, I finally settled on the mechanism I liked the best for altering the ball speed in game and tied it into scoring for the next exercise, which I also completed: earning extra lives (hence the title of this blog post).
